The „Hirschen“ ... Family-owned for 400 years

Hotel Hirschen Geschichte

Already in 1615 – the „Hirschen“ was named in a document as an inn owned by the Zeiller Family.

In 1729 the then current owner Ferdinand Zeiller fell into a financial crisis and was forced to sell the hotel. Andre Geisenhof leapt in as buyer. He married Ferdinand Zeiller’s sister, Anna-Maria Zeiller, in 1746.

In 1782 the brewery rights were given to Ignaz Geisenhof (1749-1818) for the “Hirschen“.

In 1896 the „Hirschen“ was destroyed in a major fire. Afterward, it was completely renovated and expanded by one story. Andre Geisenhof’s great grandson, Ignaz Huter (1859-1906) carried on with the brewing rights until his death. His daughter Anna Huter (1880-1931) married the Munich hotel owner’s son Franz Xaver Kraus (1879-1933). Out of this marriage were born the “siblings Kraus” Cornelia, Franz, Walter, Doris, Anna, Maria, Hertha and Kurt. They all continued to run the „Hirschen“ after their parent’s deaths. In 1908 the brewery was closed.

In 1921 the „Hirschen“ owned the first car in Reutte – a Buick!

Unitl 1932 a private bus line from Ammerwald – Linderhof – Füssen was run with the hotel-owned automobile. It was a Landauer bus; an 8-seater.

In 1932 the „Kursaal“ was remodelled into a cinema, simultaneously a new floor was added with 12 rooms.

In 1944 Hertha Kraus  - a daughter of Franz Kraus, married Hotelier Hörmann Otto from Füssen. The hotel was occupied by American forces until July 1945 and by French soldiers after that. The „Hirschen“ was completely beleaguered, except for the restaurant, until 1952 and the owners were employees of the Chef de Mission of France.

In 1973 Walter Kraus’ son -  Helmut and his wife Monika took over the “Hirschen”. Their marriage brought three daughters to the world- Janine, Vanessa and Viktoria.

In 1986 the cinema which was built in 1932 was closed and turned into a dining room.

In 1990 the „Blaue Saal“ was refurbished to the original art nouveau style of 1906. Even today the authentic chandeliers hang from the plaster vaulted ceiling.
